Now we all talk about radiation like it's a single thing, but it's actually a term referring to dozens of different ionizing rays. You have X-Rays, Beta Rays, Gamma Rays...— Doctor Duff

Doctor Duff is the wife of Professor Scara and a scientist running the Science! Center in Diamond City in Fallout 4.[Pub 1]

Background[edit]

Doctor Duff works at the Science! Center and is described as "flitting from experiment to experiment", in contrast to her wife Professor Scara, who focuses on progressing research to completion before moving on.[Pub 1] Duff's experiments explore different scientific fields, including biology, medicine and chemistry.[1][2][3] She teaches free biology lessons to those who visit, often teaching to the children from the Diamond City Schoolhouse.[1]

She is knowledgable about different types of ionizing radiation and their effects,[4] including the Gamma Rays associated with the bombs of the Great War and how creatures have adapted to it.[4][5] She determined that these adaptations allowed Bloatflys to develop a unique gland that maintains their balance and speed despite their large size.[6] Duff also theorizes that the Institute grows Synths "from the ground using recombinant plant nuclei."[7]

Professor Scara is often annoyed with Duff, who writes that she leaves her experiments on her lab bench, causing them to spill over her work.[8] Scara also writes that she only agreed to stay with Duff because her laboratory contained the gear she uses for her projects.[8] Duff has repeatedly rearranged Scara's workspace to surprise her, with Scara stating that she has a "specific way of organizing" her belongings that she doesn't like being messed with.[9]

During the quest Liberty Reprimed, Duff will tell the Sole Survivor that Professor Scara has gone missing, expressing that the two are close and that losing her would be a "great loss to the scientific community."[10][11] If Professor Scara is used to complete Liberty Prime, Scara will state that Elder Maxson allows Duff to visit her.[12]

Descriptions[edit]

A veritable treasure trove of biological information, she is never shy about sharing her wisdom with anyone willing to listen. However, her impulsive and scatterbrained nature can often lead to chaos. In her personal life, she is romantically involved with Professor Scara, forming a classic "odd couple." While Duff juggles multiple experiments at once, Scara prefers to focus on one project at a time, leading to frequent clashes when Duff tries to recruit her help. An active individual, Duff often tidies their home and lab, much to Scara's chagrin, as she dislikes having to reorganize her meticulously arranged workspace.Fallout Shelter Online Character Descriptions

  • Liberty Reprimed: When the Sole Survivor travels to the Science! Center in search of Scara, she will request that they look for her at the General Atomics Galleria, worried that something might have happened to her.
  • Fly Fishing: After speaking to her about a free biology lesson, she will instruct the player to find a Bloatfly Gland as part of a field trip. Passing a Charisma check, the Sole Survivor may ask her for Caps as compensation.

  1. 1.0 1.1 Sole Survivor: "Biology lesson?"
Doctor Duff: "That's right. Usually the kids from the schoolhouse are the first to drop by, but I don't see why I can't start the lesson with you."
    (Doctor Duff/Dialogue)
  2. Curie: "One day, I would like to establish a hospital. Where medical practioneers could come and learn and perform dangerous procedures. Would you be interested?"
Doctor Duff: "If you get that hospital up and running, yeah, sign me up."
    (Doctor Duff/Dialogue)
  3. Doctor Duff: "Did you know in Chemistry you should never mix a base into an acidic compound? Lost a few eyebrows that way, I'll tell ya."
    (Doctor Duff/Dialogue)
  4. 4.0 4.1 Sole Survivor: "Sure. Sounds fun."
Doctor Duff: "Yes! Love that enthusiasm. Now we all talk about radiation like it's a single thing, but it's actually a term referring to dozens of different ionizing rays. ou have X-Rays, Beta Rays, Gamma Rays... But which one are we most worried about? The one most associated with the big, old bombs 200 years ago?"
    (Doctor Duff/Dialogue)
  5. Sole Survivor: "Gamma rays?"
Doctor Duff: "That's right! Now. Gamma rays are bad. Really bad. If your body absorbs too much of that kind of radiation, you'll suffer from fatigue, anemia, even death. But some life forms have been living with Gamma radiation exposure for two centuries now, and they've adapted. Neat, huh?"
    (Doctor Duff/Dialogue)
  6. Sole Survivor: "Sign me up."
Doctor Duff: "You're going to go out, and find a Bloatfly Gland. You see, the oversized Bloatfly of today evolved from an earlier species of smaller fly. Radioactive adaptation has resulted in a unique gland that enables it to balance and maintain speed despite its size. So what do you say? Ready to go out and dissect one?"
    (Doctor Duff/Dialogue)
  7. Doctor Duff: "Professor! I have a new theory how the Institute makes the synths."
Professor Scara: "Oh no. We banned talking about this, remember? After last time? The shouting? Me sleeping on the cold floor of the lab for three nights?"
Doctor Duff: "That was your choice..."
Professor Scara: " And seriously... growing synths from the ground using recombinant plant nuclei? I mean, how could they even..."
Doctor Duff: "Ah ha! You do want to talk about it!"
Professor Scara: "Uh... Oh look! We have a visitor! Doctor Duff, dear, if you could bother them while I walk away from this conversation..."
    (Doctor Duff/Dialogue and Professor Scara/Dialogue)
  8. 8.0 8.1 Diamond City Terminal Entries; Entry 0027: "Duff continues to try my patience. For the umpteenth time, she left one of her "experiments" on top of my lab bench allowing its contents to ooze all over everything I was working on. I swear, she has it in for me. If her laboratory hadn't contained all of the gear I need for my projects, I never would have agreed to stay in the first place."'
  9. Professor Scara: "Duff, if I've told you once, I've told you a thousand times... stop rearranging my work space. You're driving me crazy."
Doctor Duff: "Aww. I was trying to surprise you by cleaning it up. I thought you'd be happy."
Professor Scara: " Sigh... I'm not mad at you, just frustrated. It might look like a mess, but I have a specific way of organizing everything that I own."
Doctor Duff: "Oh. Then I'm guessing you won't be happy with how I rearranged our bedroom. Sorry, Professor!"
    (Doctor Duff/Dialogue and Professor Scara/Dialogue)
  10. Sole Survivor: "Why are you so worried about her?"
Doctor Duff: "Professor and I... we're...well, we're very close."
    (Doctor Duff/Dialogue)
  11. Sole Survivor: "Why are you so worried about her?"
Doctor Duff: "Well.... if something's happened to her... it would be a great loss to the scientific community."
    (Doctor Duff/Dialogue)
  12. Professor Scara: "As a reward for my service, Elder Maxson allows Doctor Duff to visit me sometimes."
    (Professor Scara/Dialogue)

  1. 1.0 1.1 Fallout: The Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook p.287: Science! Center: "Diamond City in Boston contains this small two-story shack. Within it, a pair of romantically attached scientists, Professor Scara and Doctor Duff, focus on different experiments in the Commonwealth Wastelands. The building itself, made of corrugated iron and concrete, houses scientific equipment and paperwork with the results of many experiments. Many of these are due to Doctor Duff’s mercurial nature, flitting from experiment to experiment. Whereas her wife, Professor Scara, works to focus on only a single piece of research at a time, progressing it to completion before moving on."
